The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

The work of the Supreme Court is managed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, nominated by the Plenary Session from among Judges in office and appointed by the Saeima (the Parliament) for five years. 
The Chief Justice, after terminating his/her office, continues to perform judicial duties in one of the Senate's departments.

Authority of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is set in the law “On Judicial Power”, as well as in other laws – Law, Judicial Disciplinary Liability Law, and Office of the Prosecutor Law, as well as the Advocacy Law, Notary’s Office Law, the Law on Bailiffs and Investigatory Operations Law. Since 2020 the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has been Aigars Strupišs.

Substitution of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

During temporary absence the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, upon his/her instruction shall be substituted by one of Chairs of departments.

Administration of the Supreme Court

Management of financial and economic activities of the Supreme Court is ensured by the Administration of the Supreme Court, which consists of four divisions and the Chancery of the Supreme Court.
